University Parking and Retail Expansion for Growing Campus
Kokosing constructed a parking garage on the campus of The Ohio State University.
Inside the project
The garage is a six story, cast-in-place, post-tensioned concrete structure, with architectural pre-cast and masonry facades. Some of the design challenges included:
- Accelerating the project schedule to accommodate a six-week delay caused by contaminated soil encountered during caisson installation.
- Coordinating the substitution of a bonded post-tensioning system for an unbonded monostrand system.
- Implementing a new forming system for construction of the superstructure.
- Coordinating of construction with minimal laydown area and parking space.
Why it matters
Serving The Ohio State University’s campus needs for multi-use facilities, this parking garage includes almost 20,000 square feet of retail and office space. It links the Central Campus to the Northwest Quadrant, which now includes the Schottenstein Arena and the Max Fisher College of Business complex. The architectural brick facade in conjunction with precast spandrel panels and glass curtain walls also serve to unite the appearance of the garage with other attractions on campus.
